Retail Service Assistant, Lysander Road Store, Yeovil

"I moved from Dorchester to Yeovil after spending 8 years as a social worker. It wasn’t as fulfilling as you’d think, so I needed a fresh challenge and Screwfix was advertising a Retail Service Assistant role. It caught my eye and I’ve been here for over a year now. It’s great fun!

Currently, I’m part-time doing 20 hours per week. It’s a mix of mornings and afternoons, and there’s some flexibility with swapping shifts. It fits around your lifestyle, which is good because I’m trying to get into MMA. I did taekwondo for 14 years and I’m a 2nd dan black belt, which gives you a great awareness of your surroundings and the ability to react quicker. I don’t want to be that person who sees someone fall over, and keeps on walking. It also teaches you respect and integrity. Obviously, you want to be the best you can be, but not at the expense of someone else. It’s a bit like being at Screwfix.

All of us go above and beyond. Customers are like “ooh, that was fast!” because we’re always on the ball. And we don’t mess around. If we’re not sure of something, we’ll tell them straight and find someone who knows. The team feels like a second family. You can have a week off, come back and feel like you’ve never been away – in a good sense. Everyone will check to see if you’re in a good place.

It’s going well. I’m just about to finish the First Steps, a programme preparing me to become a supervisor. It’s a mix of on-the-job training and learning through workshops – and it really does show that they look after you. They’ll help you develop if you come in with the right attitude."
