Martin Portlock

Reporting and Planning Manager, Head Office, Yeovil

“I grew up and went to college in Bridgwater, Somerset. From there, I started my first job at a practice, where I completed my AAT qualification. Moving on to other local firms, taking roles as Accounts Senior and Accounts Supervisor, I studied and achieved my ACCA qualification and a first-class honours degree in Applied Accounting.

Screwfix was my first move into industry, initially taking a role in the Commercial Finance team as the Logistics and Supply Chain Finance Analyst. It was a step up in terms of both pay and prospects. I’ve been here 3 years and was recently promoted to Reporting and Planning Finance Manager, leading a team of five people. Our job is to report the Screwfix financial results, KPIs, budgets and forecasts to Kingfisher. Right now, I’m just really determined to settle into the role and prove myself. So far, the people in my team have been great to work with, we all get along well. The team are settled and self-sufficient, which has really helped me to focus and understand my new role.

The culture is nice here, too. Being from a practice background, it’s usually quite smart and quiet. But you can tell as you walk around the office, it’s the complete opposite here. There is a lively atmosphere, conversations while you’re working and people are all encouraged to communicate. It clearly works. We’ve almost doubled in size since I’ve been here – which is good because there’s always something new to aim for.

There’s a great work-life balance as well. You don’t have to work lots of hours. I’m really into my sport, so I enjoy our big annual cricket match against the auditors.
