We asked two of our current undergraduate placement students, and one former student who has now returned to work for us full-time following her graduation, for their views on our scheme.

Screwfix are proud to offer an innovative and exciting scheme designed to attract high quality graduates into the business. As a major employer we are committed to recruiting the very best and brightest talent available, and for us that means ensuring that we have a regular intake of well qualified graduates with bags of potential and drive.
However, rather than bringing people into the company after they have graduated, we choose to do things a little differently - and we think better! Our scheme offers places to undergraduates about to embark on their year in industry, which is typically the third year of a four year course. We will offer you a real job, with real responsibilities and demands, and immerse you into the daily cut and thrust of one of our working departments. This certainly isn’t work shadowing or sitting around observing!
The positions that we offer to undergraduates are not created purely for this scheme, but instead are core roles within our existing headcount, and we recruit undergraduates instead of going to the external market. As such, you will be involved in real tasks and projects that will have a meaningful, direct impact on the success and profitability of our company, so you will be able to make a genuine contribution. Trained in all the facets of the role and well supported by management, our undergraduates learn the ropes while experiencing all of the regular challenges faced by their colleagues. We will treat you as normal employees rather than temporary help, and ensure that you return to the final year of your degree course with some genuinely valuable experience under your belt.
Ensuring Graduate Success
You will have the opportunity to work closely with highly experienced, high achieving professionals, learning and absorbing knowledge and insight from people at the top of their game and respected in their business sector. The training you will receive will provide the building blocks for your career and help you to establish a solid base of skills to take forward when you graduate.
Critically, undergraduate placement students who are successful in their role and make a positive impact on the business will have the opportunity to secure a permanent offer to come back and work for us post-graduation in a first line management level position. We usually make these offers at the end of the placement contract, so you will approach your final year safe in the knowledge that you have a job to go to when you graduate. This means no additional stress during your exams, no trawling the graduate recruitment advertising, no more recruitment fairs, no more assessment centres or interviews – just a fantastic opportunity to get earning straight away in a company where your skills and expertise are already known and valued.
You will be able to beat your peers to a great graduate role and get your future secured, in a company where you already have relevant experience, established relationships, and existing knowledge. What’s more, those individuals who come back to join us on a permanent basis will receive automatic entry onto our structured commercial development training programme, and will benefit from the outstanding career opportunities that come from being part of a huge corporate organisation like Kingfisher.
Over the past few years we have forged strong relationships with a number of universities, and have been able to successfully recruit a number of undergraduate placement students into key commercial roles within the business. A number of these people have now returned to us following their graduation, and are now well on their way to becoming our next generation of senior business leaders.
In fact, this scheme has proven to be so successful for us that we are continuing to expand it every year, typically taking on undergraduate placement students in several key areas of the business, including Buying, Marketing, Supply Chain, Finance, Technology Projects, Customer Operations and Retail. We’re certain that our involvement in this programme will assist in taking our company from strength to strength – and you could be a key part of our success story.
