You’ve heard from us why we think this is such a great opportunity, but what about the people who are actually on their placement year with us at the moment? We asked our current placement students why they opted to join Screwfix, and to tell us how they’re getting on…

‘I chose to do a placement at Screwfix because I knew that the company was still growing and would offer me the ideal opportunity to learn and develop throughout the year. So far my placement has exceeded my expectations as a great deal of responsibility has been given to me, as Screwfix give placement students actual job roles within the company. An equal amount of support and guidance has been given by both colleagues and those involved with the placement programme, when I need it.

My job involves looking after Screwfix affiliate and comparison programmes which takes up a fair proportion of my time on a day-today basis. There are obviously tasks that have to be done routinely but I do consider my job varied, as I also look after finances for most of my department as well. Furthermore I’ve taken on a number of projects.

These include a usability study for the new website Screwfix is building and also introducing a new comparison programme. So I would recommend a placement as it will offer you real life experience that will, give you a solid basis to progress your career.’

‘Working at a Screwfix Trade Counter for only a few months and already I am trusted with many responsibilities from cash management to opening and closing the shop. This valuable experience enables me to put into practice many of the things that I have been taught on my university course.

Every week is different with a chance to learn a range of new skills from the day-to-day operations to managing a team. Constantly facing new upcoming challenges allows you to contribute to the company by striving to achieve targets and objectives. I have had the chance to build new relationships with the team and have received a vast amount of support throughout including First Steps to Management courses to build on my management skills.

Overall, I am learning and developing my experience rapidly in a small amount of time whilst feeling like a valid member of the team and, I believe, making a contribution to the operation of the company.’

‘I was surprised at how quickly I settled in at Screwfix. I immediately felt part of the team, as they give placement students real job roles and real responsibilities. My role within the Business Change Programme meant that I was involved early on and learnt so much; such as problem solving, decision making, research and analysis and skills. I've already worked on numerous projects managing the requirements analysis, scoping and estimating.’

I've developed my interpersonal skills, learned to build strong relationships, both internally and externally and liaised with customers to facilitate projects.

Overall I believe Screwfix has been a relevant choice for my degree title and certainly helpful for my final year. It is definitely a company to consider when searching for placements, as Screwfix offers real life experience and will provide the foundations to your future.'

‘I have learnt more about business and marketing in my first few months at Screwfix than I did from the first two years of my degree! I work in the e-commerce department managing the affiliates and comparison sites that we work in conjunction with to market Screwfix.com.

I was surprised by the amount of responsibility that is bestowed upon you from the start and how much the focus is put on your own development and getting what you want out of your placement year.’
