What jobs are on offer?

This year we are looking for talented retail focussed individuals to fill critical vacancies in most of our main business areas. Placement students will typically join in a support position, getting involved in critical day-to-day activities and working closely with experienced and senior professionals, learning the job from the ground up. Opportunities will be available in the following departments:

Screwfix has an ever growing population of nearly 200 branches (we call them Trade Counters) throughout England, Scotland and Wales, and they are at the heart of our business growth, generating the largest percentage of our revenue. This is a fantastic opportunity to come in at a supervisory level where you will be able to learn first hand the business side of our retail function as well as experiencing the day to day management of people.

The commercial heart of our business. Every penny we turn over comes from selling what this department buys. They negotiate the deals that ensure we make a healthy profit. They decide what we sell, and what deals we can offer our customers. A placement student here would typically be brought in as a Buying Assistant, working closely with the Buyers to establish what the best deals are likely to be, researching potential new suppliers, and helping to develop the ranges of products we have in the catalogue. You will also experience working with our Commercial Planning and Commercial Support teams.

Without this department, our customers wouldn’t get to know about the great deals we have on offer. A placement student here might work in areas such as the look of our advertising and promotional materials, the content of the website, the design of the catalogue, providing insight into the needs of our customers, or helping to determine how we market ourselves to different types of customer.

These are the people that look after how we get our products from factories all over the world into our distribution centres, then out to our Trade Counters and our customers. They design and manage the systems that ensure we can fulfil hundreds of thousands of orders each year, from getting thousands of products to the electrical contractors on the site of the new Olympic stadium, to delivering a single power drill to a DIY fanatic to complete their latest project. In this department you could expect to play a part in the organising and scheduling of work that drives this incredibly complex and highly efficient process.

This important department analyses and accounts for what we spend, advising the wider business on financial issues, and manage all of our financial transactions. Opportunities will be available in both the Operational and Commercial finance arms of the company, and whichever area you enter, you will find yourself playing a key role working with the numbers and figures that determine how successful we are as a company.

Our Business Change department are an innovative and dynamic team who manage all the complex technology and systems projects within the business. Whether it is rolling out a new multi-million pound point-of-sale software system in our Trade Counters or designing and building software that integrates the many different systems we use across the company, this team is at the centre of it. As a placement student here, you might undertake a key role in project co-ordination, analysis and testing, or another position in this most interesting of areas.

One of our key sales channels is our award-winning Contact Centre, based in Yeovil. With hundreds of people taking calls from our customers every day, this team provide first-class service to our customers and a vital revenue source for the business. Placement students here can expect to gain a thorough grounding in contact centre operations and develop a wide range of skills in this interesting and stimulating department.

Responsible for bringing in good people, managing them well and developing them for the future – an exciting challenge in a business that’s doubled its staff in just two years and will continue to increase numbers as the business expands further. Inspired by continual improvement, this team are constantly introducing new strategies and processes as experts in recruitment, talent & development, communications, employee relations, organisational structure and change. In this department you could expect to play a part in the HR Shared Services team delivering HR support to the business.
